Phone Home
A mixed media installation at Local Project for the exhibition “Secrets of Queens.” This site specific work is a proportionally correct map of Queens constructed out of phone cards used by Queens residents to call home to their countries of origin. I collected discarded phone cards for two years in order to make this work. The phone cards typically depict culturally specific references, such as a famous monument (e.g. the Taj Mahal for a card used to call India), and are printed in a variety of languages. This installation refers to New York’s most diverse borough, the constantly changing face of the U.S., global economics, and the interconnectedness of the world.
