Works in Progress: 148 Collaborative

This on-going project is conducted in collaboration with Rene Mayorga and Tom Wilson at their studio in Jersey City, NJ.

The 148 Collaborative is an exchange of symbols and imagery as well as materials and methods. In this highly craft-oriented series we typically start with a vinyl film poster that is stretched on a wood frame like canvas. Using paint and other applied media, we combine deconstructed images, words, and found objects to create narratives that refer to cinematic conventions.

Essential to this group project is the literal and physical exchange of the artworks. Our collaboration also functions as a comment on consumerism. Just as the market breeds competition and causes individual interests to produce variations on the same item, we forego individuality to create a communal product.

Culturally specific imagery from India is now commonplace in popular society. This project reflects a cross-section of a post-global society in which the world’s cultural heritage is rapidly shared.
